KeyMapper is an app that can remap keys in extremely customizable ways.

Android version 8.0 or newer.
D-Pad support Somewhat supported

Download from F-Droid

A key map can be set to rebind a key completely, or to keep a key function while adding additional functionality. You can have have functions bound to single press, double press, and long press. You can also chain these key inputs to create sequenced macros.

For example, using Key Mapper you can bind keys to turn up and down volume, or turn up and down brightness.

Key Mapper also has grouping for keybinds, which you can assign to app constraints to create app specific profiles. For example, binding a key to tap a screen element such as the send button in a messaging app.

Never set Key Mapper as the default keyboard if you use a lock screen as it will be unable to input. More on that later in this page.

Usage

Consider using a screen mirroring tool to assist with setting up keybinds. For more information on setting up screen mirroring, see the Screen Mirroring page.

If you want to have Key Mapper bind buttons to keycodes or keyboard inputs. To do so will require root, and can be done with the Key Mapper in the 4.0 release (Currently only available on the Github: https://github.com/keymapperorg/KeyMapper/releases).

Note: Unfortunately Key Mapper does not work while the phone is closed, as the phone enters a kind of sleep mode.

Using the "Custom" keys

The “Custom” keys (I, II, and III) will prompt you to add shortcuts when tapped, you can remove these prompts while retaining secondary functions by debloating the jp.kyocera.customizekey package. See the Debloating Apps to learn how to do this.
