Unlocking the bootloader (a necessary step to root the device) wipes any data you have on the device. Rooting the device before putting any data on it prevents you from losing any time and work.
Additionally, it may not be possible to root a phone on a certain software version. Check the version number before making a purchase if you plan to root your device, and reference the table below.
